 Abilities

As a programmer, I developed and took part in creating several applications including commercial, web and research ones. My possess experience in programming languages such as PHP, VBA, C++/CLI and others.
The description of all of them can be found both in Experience and Portfolio sections.

Apart from that, I created a couple of websites. I have never designed a website from scratch but I do have experience in front-end editing and modification with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery.
Portfolio Websites section presents my achievements in that field.

Newly acquired abilities in Adobe products and being an amateur graphic designer also gave me an opportunity to release my creativity.
Feel invited to see my work in Portfolio Graphics, Other activities Photography and Galleries sections of my website.

Creating

I'm a person who looks at problems from different points of view and explores possible solutions. I research, study and pose questions in order to solve arisen problems.

I do like that not only professionally, but I also prefer training my mind in logic and computer as well as the board games, for example, Khet 2.0 and Portal.

Solving problems

Working as a developer, programmer and administrator requires a good work space and time organization and planning. In my work experience, I gained experience of proper managing time and resources.

In my most recent project for Homak (CRM, I worked on the task on my own in my home, managing by myself time, resources and planning whole project.

Moreover, I am a former organizer of two international student conferences OPTO Meeting 2013 and IONS-14 / Torun which took place in Torun in 2013 (see Other activities Organizing section) and a former president of NCU OSA Student Chapter and to my responsibilities included planning and organizing all of the chapter activities and making sure they were completed on time. During this period of time, I learnt how to manage a small group of people.

Planning, organizing & coordinating
In years 2012-2014 I took part in many of presentations related to the progress of my work, including:
  • presentations of created software during the implementation of a new system in Elana S.A. when I worked for ADOP Sp. z o.o. on applications on demand,
  • presentations of my work at several international conferences (see Other activities Conferences section) during my collaboration with Nicolaus Copernicus University Faculty of Physics and an OBIG research group,
  • educational presentations for children during physics workshops (see Other activities Taking part section)
  • I polished my English and learnt how to be confident during presentations in front of a broader audience.

Recently I passed IELTS exam with an overall result of 7.0 out of 9.0 (listening: 7.5 Reading: 7.5 Writing: 6.5 Speaking: 6.5) which is level C1 according to IELTS. Therefore, my English is not excellent but is indeed very good.

Communication & presentation skills

In my career, I took part in many different types of activities. It was not always easy as sometimes:

  • I did not know technology required in a project and I needed to learn it very fast,
  • I worked on my own on a whole project,
  • I was pushed into completely new grounds out of my expertise and needed to fit in.

When I was travelling in Australia, my couch-surfing host wrote on www.couchsurfing.com about me this opinion: "Reserved at the beginning but fits in perfectly after a small while". This is a truth not only about my personality in the terms of being a likeable person but I always adapt to circumstances and a new environment by solving new problems, learning new things and technologies.

I am an autodidact and a fast learner, hard-working, dedicated to a cause I signed for and I always do my best.

Even if I fail, I learn from my mistakes and I try not to do them again.

Easily adapting, hardworking & never give up

Programmer & DB designer Employer: ADOP Sp. z o.o., Torun, Poland Technologies:  MySQL, MS Access, VBA, Silverlight Type of contract: a contract of employment Ending cause: mainly because I got a better job opportunity

This is another one of the most relevant jobs I have got so far.

I was developing ERP, CRM, data- & document-flow, warehouse, resource and energy management applications using MySQL as a database system, MS Access & VBA as a UI interface.
We created many applications for big companies, manufacturers and factories. For example, we needed to create stored procedures and functions for predicting a resource consumption based on many parameters: a shape of products, quantities of chemical ingredients, power usage etc..

Especially challenging was the last project during which we made two applications for two big international companies, Elana and Torsoft, because of the lack of workforce and a very strict and short timetable:

    • the first application for production and resource management,
    • the other one for energy production and costs management.

In the last two weeks of the project I worked for ~11 hours a day but with determination, organizational skills and hard work my team and I did the job.

What is more, I was also helping my boss during the implementation of our systems in two big factories. I was responsible for presenting our solution and helping final users to navigate their new system, solving and explaining all the occurring issue. Because I am a polite, helpful and open person, who is able to present his knowledge and experience to others I was able to help contractor's employees working with their new system and everything went well in the process.

We finished the project with a great success but it was a very hard time for me. Still, I enjoyed the possibility to create such big projects, I really liked having contact with final users by obtaining their opinions and sharing my knowledge with them.

You can find more information about some of the projects in Portfolio Applications section and here.

Web application programmer Employer: FH MIM, Torun, Poland Technologies:  PHP, MySQL, xHTML, JavaScript Type of contract: volunteering Ending cause: finished the project

I consider this project as the most important one in my career not only because it was the first one I have ever made, but also because it made me who I am today - a web developer, a programmer, a database designer and administrator.

F.H. MIM is my parents' company. I worked there to get on with resource management and to see how small company works from inside. I needed this knowledge because of my MSc degree thesis project to create an administration panel for a warehouse with PHP and MySQL.

I confronted dozens of challenges during the process of creating the application. I had not known PHP before, I did not have experience with CSS and designing and my knowledge of designing databases and developing applications using MySQL was weak. But I had a clear goal ahead of me which I wanted to accomplish. The strength of character, dedication, always trying to do my best were the skills which made it possible to finish the project and almost immediately after that I was able to obtain a job in ADOP.

Business Process Support Department Employer: Nestle, Torun, Poland Technologies: MS Access, SQL, VBA, MS Excel Type of contract: a contract for a specific task Ending cause: very low salary (~80EUR/month), started my MSc project

I worked in a Polish department of Nestle in Torun in Business Process Support Department.

My main duties were to administer a department's local MS Access database containing information about sales, contractors, products etc. and calculate reports in MS Excel, VBA and in SAP web application.

Apart from that, I created an application for correction of contractor data. I had to analyse a big dataset with information about over 300 000 companies in order to automatically find and correct or remove duplicated data. I developed VBA and SQL scripts which analysed data, marked possible duplicates and showed results to a user who verified them if needed. The analysis was done based on regular expressions, addresses, phone numbers etc.. I found that there were 100 000 unique records.

Information about this project can be found in Portfolio Application section and here.

Programmer & DB designer Employer: Inter-tel, Torun, Poland Technologies: SQL, MS Access, MS Excel, VBA Type of contract: internship Ending cause: end of internship

During my MSc degree studies, I decided to get my first job in IT. I started with an internship in a small 3-month project for Inter-tel company.

INTER-TEL used MS Excel files as main documents to store relevant information about their services. Depending on the type of service the forms looked slightly different, but also they can have different fields in the same type of service by removing unused fields and/or adding a new type of information.

The idea was to create an application which reads MS Excel files with forms, moves all data to the database and recreates MS Excel forms in MS Access by automatic generation of forms using VBA.

More information about my automatic MS Access forms generation from custom Excel documents can be found in Portfolio Applications section and here.

  • “The IT Guy”

For many years I was helping my family and friends with IT issues as they think of me as "the IT guy". I was repairing their computers, installing new software, solving malware problems and suggesting which new equipment they should buy. Moreover, as a developer, I was creating small applications suited to their needs.

Thesis: Database and Internet Technologies for e-Commerce (MySQL and PHP)
2010-02 - 2011-10

Almost till the end of my engineering studies, I did not know what I wanted to do in my future life until I finished a course about MS Office during which I created a database with SQL. I enjoyed this so much because it was very creative, I knew there are millions of possibilities to where databases can be used for and I felt that with creating, designing and administrating databases there cannot be any place for boredom as there were so many things to learn. At that moment I decided that I want to do something from scratch therefore, I suggested my own idea to my supervisor for a project. Because my parents have a small company, I proposed a topic of creating an administration panel for a warehouse.

I confronted dozens of challenges during the process of creating the application. I had not known PHP before, I did not have experience with CSS and designing and my knowledge of designing databases and developing applications using MySQL was weak. But I had a clear goal ahead of me which I wanted to accomplish.

The system included the following:

  • creating new products, producers, orders (in & out), customers,
  • every product can be described by any feature and category previously created in the system,
  • creating reports of day-to-day sales and purchases in specified category/product/producer/client and then export them to PDF file,
  • possibility to print invoices,
  • the whole panel was created to be the admin panel of an online shop, but there was no time to create a client-side website.

Management

During my Master's Degree studies I was helping my mother in her company. I was learning how a small company works. I used learnt knowledge in my Master's Degree application called Administration panel for warehouse management.

This experience also helped me in my next jobs and taught me how to manage time, resources, money and small business.

In 2012/2013 I was a vice-president of NCU OSA Student Chapter. During this time I organized two conferences (OPTO Meeting 2013 and IONS-14 / Torun) a competition (more about it in a report of OPTO Meeting & IONS-14) and educational trips for children. You can read more about those activities in other sections of this page.

During academic year 2013/2014, I was the president of the same organization. That year my colleagues and I organized three competitions and educational trips.

During those 2 years, I learnt how to organize and manage big events and how to manage human resources.

Organizing

In 2013 as a vice-president of NCU OSA Student Chapter my wife and I organized two big international conferences at Nicolaus Copernicus University Faculty of Physics:

We were managing a small group of people (3 persons). Even with such a small group of people (including us), we were able to organize two four-day events for about 80 participants plus 15 guests, during which we arranged social meetings, coffee-breaks, lunches, trips, competitions, lab-tours, workshops and much more.

At the beginning, we didn't have any resources and money, but at the end, we had enough to host all people and had the patronage of such companies like:

Both events turned out to be a great success. You can read about them in our final report.

2013 & 2014 was a year when our Faculty chapters organized two tournaments of Khet 2.0 with official support from game's creators.

First took place during OPTO Meeting 2013 & IONS-14 / Torun conferences. You can read our official report about our Khet 2.0 tournament.

The second one was organized in winter on 26th February 2014.

Taking part

During OPTO Meeting 2013 & IONS-14 / Torun conferences I also took part in organizing a very creative event which was "Optical Hare and Hounds" - a city game for our participants.

More about this edition of the game can be read in our conferences report.

After a great success of the aforementioned game, we decided to organize a 2nd edition - "Scavenger Hunt" - for all residents of our city, Torun.

More than 100 people signed up to play our game. Preparation took us a lot of time, stress and strength, but we were extremely happy and satisfied with the final result of our game and so did participants!

Our chapter takes part in many actions & events. We mostly teach young people aged from kindergarten-level age to high-school teenagers that physics is fun!

We do so by organizing workshops, travels, festivals, competitions, etc..

I took part in many actions of this kind and had fun doing it.

travelling

Even if I consider myself as a stay-at-home person I like travelling very much!

I love seeing new places, especially observing nature & changes of human history. During my adventures, I always try to capture images of the world around me with my camera so when I come back to them I can recall those interesting places I've been to.

In Galleries section you can see some of the places I've visited. If you like any of my photos, feel free to write to me and ask for Hi-Res versions.
